Envelope Attack

Envelope attack Subtractive Synthesizer

The envelope changes the synthesizer’s sound over time. In these next few examples, the envelope will control volume.

When you press a key, the envelope’s attack stage begins. An attack with a long duration will bring the note to full volume gradually. A shorter attack will bring the note to full volume more suddenly.

Try changing the attack time with the slider below. Press and hold the piano keys to play notes and hear the result.

Attack time is measured in milliseconds (ms). An attack set to 1000 ms will take 1 second to reach full volume.
